A Tale of Two Drug Cultures: British Columbia Marijuana Industry Thrives While Hard Drug Harm Reduction Faces Crisis.

In the endless mountains of British Columbia, on the Gulf Islands scattered along its Pacific Coast, and in countless basements and greenhouses across the province, British Columbia's marijuana trade is booming. No one can say with certainty, but US and Canadian officials and industry insiders put the industry's annual take at $1 to $3 billion annually. Much of the crop is destined for markets in the United States. Police estimate that there are some 9,000 grow operations in Vancouver alone, with another thousand in Nanaimo, a medium-sized city a ferry ride away on Vancouver Island. Statements ranking the province's pot business as its second or third largest, behind only logging and possibly tourism, are both common and uncontested.

British Columbia Drug Addiction

Marijuana use increases the heart rate as much as 50 percent, depending on the amount of THC.
It can cause chest pain in people who have a poor blood supply to the heart - and it produces these effects more rapidly than tobacco smoke does. Scientists believe that marijuana can be especially harmful to the lungs because users often inhale the unfiltered smoke deeply and hold it in their lungs as long as possible. Therefore, the smoke is in contact with lung tissues for long periods of time, which irritates the lungs and damages the way they work. Marijuana smoke contains some of the same ingredients in tobacco smoke that can cause emphysema and cancer. In addition, many marijuana users also smoke cigarettes; the combined effects of smoking these two substances creates an increased health risk.

Seemingly every town of more than a few thousand people has its own grow store to supply the equipment for sophisticated indoor hydroponic marijuana cultivation. Vancouver alone boasts more than 30 such establishments. By way of comparison, the Washington-Baltimore metropolitan area, with nearly twice the population of greater Vancouver, has one such business. And the local product has gained a global reputation among connoisseurs as high-THC, high-quality smoke. Some of the seed strains developed there in the last two decades are considered among the most desirable in the world.

"Burnout" is a term first used by marijuana smokers themselves to describe the effect of prolonged use. Young people who smoke marijuana heavily over long periods of time can become dull, slow moving, and inattentive. These "burned-out" users are sometimes so unaware of their surroundings that they do not respond when friends speak to them, and they do not realize they have a problem.
Laboratory studies have shown that animals exhibit symptoms of drug withdrawal after cessation of prolonged marijuana administration. Some human studies have also demonstrated withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, stomach pain, aggression, and anxiety after cessation of oral administration of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), marijuana's principal psychoactive component. Now, NIDA-supported researchers at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, and Columbia University in New York City have shown that individuals who regularly smoke marijuana experience withdrawal symptoms after they stop smoking the drug.

Studies at Columbia University in New York City have demonstrated that, in addition to aggression, marijuana smokers experience other withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, stomach pain, and increased irritability during abstinence from the drug. "These results suggest that dependence may be an important consequence of repeated daily exposure to marijuana," says NIDA. And compared to US standards, sanctions against marijuana growers are positively gentle. In a study of 112 growers prosecuted in Vancouver in the late 1990s, the Vancouver Sun found that roughly a quarter served no time and paid no fine, about half paid fines of under $1200, and only 14% did any time behind bars at all.

The maximum sentence for marijuana growing is two years, compared to a possible life sentence in US states such as Texas or a mandatory minimum 10-year sentence under US federal guidelines. But in a stark illustration of prevailing attitudes, last month the British Columbia Court of Appeals slapped down a local judge who had the audacity to actually hand out the 2-year maximum. Although many attempts have been made to legalize marijuana, it still remains a dangerous drug, which is too often underestimated. It has addictive properties and some life-threatening side effects. By the constant publicizing of marijuana in the media as being inoffensive, the general public has grown lenient and indifferent towards the drug. Don't be fooled by what others say, get the real facts on marijuana.

Winning over Drugs with Narconon.

- After the Narconon drug rehab program. Interview with L. N

Interview with a graduate

Q : How old are you and how long have you been a drug or alcohol abuser?

A : I am 28 years old and I've been abusing drugs and alcohol for the past 14 years.

Q : Could you tell us how your drug abuse started?

A : My drug abuse started with drinking alcohol out of curiosity. As the years went on the drinking got out of hand and the drug use started to escalate into harder more addictive substances such as cocaine & crack.

Q : What kind of relationship did you have with your friends?

A : My friends and I shared the new feelings that came with experimentation of drugs. We lived as a family and took care of one another. In need we were always a tight group of people. Experimenting with psychedelics was just the beginning, though as the drugs became heavier and more addictive, relationships fell apart. Most of my friends caught their drug use and followed another path. I wasn't so lucky and soon I found myself doing drugs on my own. Eventually my friends distanced themselves from me and the best relationships fell apart.

Q : What kind of advantages did you think drugs were creating for you?

A : I thought drugs were making me more open minded. I believed they were opening new gates to serenity and knowledge and that I was more confident in making new friends with the same delusion.

Q : When did drugs become a problem for you?

A : I believe alcohol had always been a problem for me. I would make decisions that normally I would never make. I think around 18 years old, drugs became a problem when my drug use was driving away my friends and family from my life.

Q : When did you hear about Narconon?

A : I heard about Narconon when I was searching for drug rehabs over the internet in January 2006.

Q : What are the differences you've noticed between Narconon and any other rehab you've been to or heard about?

A : I've never been to any other rehab, but from discussions with others, the sauna (New Life Detoxification Program) is a major difference.

Q : What steps in the Narconon program helped or are going to help you the most?

A : Learning about antisocial personality started my thinking about who I surrounded myself with in a new direction. I began to learn who I am again and what really makes me happy.

Q : If I asked you to compare how you feel now to how you felt before coming to Narconon what would you say?

A : Completely different. I am happier than I've been in years.

Q : If you had something to communicate to the public about drugs or the Narconon program what would it be?

A : This program shouldn't be limited to drugs and alcohol abusers. The skills I've learned here at Narconon will be useful in anyone's life who might have difficulty maintaining happiness for whatever reason. For me it's reminded me of what a beautiful person I am and what I have to offer the world around me. It's helped me regain great relationship with the people who really love me. I'm alive again.

Q : How do you feel since you complete the Narconon program?

A : I feel like I'm awake again and ready to live life and can be happy without drugs and alcohol. I'm ready for whatever life has to throw my way. I have realistic goals and am excited about the new experiences and relationships I will encounter. I'm beginning over again and taking what I have much more seriously and with appreciation. I'm happy to be alive and share what I know and have with others.

Lastest news

Since leaving Narconon in April, I realize that things look very different when I’m sober. I have a newer, more positive outlook on things and the people in my environnement. I have been enjoying time with my daughter. We attend school functions and play at the beach when the weather is nice. I have been living with my mother and things are better than I can remember in the past. I know this because how I feel inside makes all the difference. I attended a mother’s day with my mom and daughter and we had a blast dancing and laughing. I also went to a “ladies night out” at the retirement center where my grandma lives and my grandmother asked me to read a poem outloud to the 80 or so women that attended. It took every nerve I had but I did it and when I looked up, everyone in the room was crying. Afterward a few of the ladies thanked me. I was so proud of myself but the best part was that it made my grandma proud of me. I am making the best life for myself right now and I’m clean. I am not saying that things are always easy because they aren’t, but I know that keeping a clear mind is the first step to getting through those tough times. I’m communicating and taking healthy risks and I’m happy with myself for the first time in my life. Good luck to everyone.
